Why I am Popping that Champagne

Why I am popping that champagne! First, the LibDems have increased their seats and diversity although we have lost some incredible people including Nick Clegg.

Apart from Labour sweeping most of the vote in Hammersmih, I was the only other candidate to increase their vote. The Conservatives, Greens and UKIP all diminished theirs.

I was gladdened and humbled when standing leafleting outside Hammersmith Station, many people walked up to me and said, “Joyce I am so sorry I will not be voting for you as I can not risk Theresa May winning, so will vote Labour although I would have voted for you.” I understood what was at stake.

The system works against small parties, but our Liberal Values have won! The Labour candidate in Hammersmith was practically running on the LibDem manifesto, the hard Brexit agenda is now totally undermined, talk of grammar schools now in the long grass, austerity and cut, cut, cut totally undermined, and most importantly for me, there is now less threat of watering down of the Human Rights Act. The LibDems may not get the credit, they never do, but we do greatly influence the agenda to lessen extremism.

Also I am so happy to have represented women and ethnic minorities on the podium in Hammersmith. I was never going to overturn the large Labour majority, especially with the total lack of resources, but I was batting for something bigger than a post, the advancement of the values that I hold dear. I hope that every girl, and every ethnic minority child that I met will imagine themselves on the podium in the future. Leadership can have a different face, We are not quite there yet, but we are making progress.

Dear Voter,

Undecided?
Every vote for the Conservatives is a vote for the dementia tax, NHS cuts, sacked teachers and a bad Brexit deal. If you are a Conservative supporter but those things worry you, then switch like many are doing this year.  Vote instead for someone who will stand up for you and your family.

A vote for Labour is a vote for continuous infighting.  You don’t know whether you are voting for Corbyn or for someone who will undermine him. The country needs a strong opposition.

A vote for Joyce Onstad in Hammersmith, is a vote for a better deal on Europe. Every Liberal Democrat MP elected tomorrow will stand up for your schools and hospitals. And every Liberal Democrat MP elected tomorrow will stand up to Theresa May on the dementia tax and everything else. Stand up and make your vote count for Joyce Onstad and the Liberal Democrats.

There is a huge untapped body of people who are the new voiceless, the moderate voices of the progressive centre of Britain, who are angrier and more voiceless and more disregarded that at any time of our lives, only the Liberal Democrats are speaking up for these people.

Human rights

Theresa May is simply posturing about being tough on terror as she panics that her abysmal record is coming under scrutiny. As Vince Cable disclosed last night, in her years as Home Secretary she was willing to offer up the police for cut after cut.

We have been here before – a kind of nuclear arms race in terror laws. It might give the appearance of action, but what the security services lack is not more power, but more resources, and responsibility for that lies squarely with Theresa May. All she would do is reduce our freedoms, not terrorism.

Extreme Brexit will burn a hole in your pocket

Prices are already rising and set to keep climbing because of Theresa May’s choice to pursue an extreme Brexit.  So many parts of our economy are unable to plan as a result of Theresa May’s self-destructive decision to leave the single market.  Industries up and down the country are already struggling to absorb cost increases due to the weaker pound – a direct consequence of the EU referendum.

Shepherd’s Bush Market

The labour-run council of H&F has failed the market traders and small businesses. Just like it has failed to give clarification and stability to those families affected by the Earls Court development. People are made to live in limbo with great uncertainty for too long. Labour takes for granted the vote of people in lower incomes, small businesses and ethnic minority communities. It is time for the people of Hammersmith to dare to change their reality by voting for real change, for a brighter and different future with pragmatic, small business friendly, clear sighted and fair Liberal Democrats. Vote Joyce Onstad for Parliament in Hammersmith on June 8th, Vote for real positive Change!

A sad day for our country

My heart and condolences go out to the many people in Manchester who have been touched by this tragedy one way or another.  It is a terrible day our country but  we must never let fear, hate and any form of terror win. Love will always prevail. To quote my friend Zack Polanski “We don’t blame the blameless or change our lives in fear. We get on and we never let them win”.

Hope is in the Air

A sense of hope was thick in the air last night.

I was at the launch of the Liberal Democrats Manifesto in east London and there was a lot of excitement, optimism and hope. I’m proud to be the candidate of a party with such a strong positive message. Amid all of the current troubles in the world, the UK and Hammersmith, we are telling people that it’s not too late to make a difference.

One major focus of the Manifesto is housing, which is a big issue here in Hammersmith.  On the doorstep, many people have told me their concern and even anger about the lack of affordable housing.  It’s no surprise when the price of an average house  in Hammersmith has rocketed 50 percent over the past five years to over £1m!

The Liberal Democrats have a comprehensive policy to deal with the crisis:

  • Directly build homes to fill the gap left by the market, to help reach our house-building target of 300,000 homes a year, through a government commissioning programme to build homes for sale and rent
  • Set up a new government-backed Housing and Infrastructure Development Bank to provide long-term capital for major new settlements and house building projects
  • Enable local authorities to penalise excessive land-banking when builders with planning permission have failed to build after 3 years
  • Allow councils to levy up to 200% Council Tax on empty homes including second homes and ‘buy to leave empty’ investments from overseas
  • Ensure 500,000 affordable, energy-efficient homes are built over five years
  • Lift the borrowing cap on Local Authorities to build more social homes for rent

The housing crisis has been left to the vagaries of the market for too long. Now is the time to take action!

It’s worse than you thought!

Reading the news this morning made me angry all over again over what the Tories have up their sleeves. It’s even worse than I had thought!

Looking at a Bloomberg article where they have analysed the 60 most winnable Tory seats, it seems that Hard Brexiters are dominant, occuying three quarters of in these seats.  The outcome of this would strengthen the Nigel Farage wing of the party and give Teresa May greater power to pursue a very Hard Brexit focused on curbing immigration and repealing European Legislation instead of  promoting trade and economic growth.

“The overall balance of Parliament looks like it will lean toward the harder side of Brexit than had May not called the election, ” Bloomberg quoted  Mujtaba Rahman, managing director at the Eurasia Group as saying.

UK inflation figures out today, which were the highest since 2013, shows how Brexit is already hitting pocketbooks even before the negotiations begin!

But people do not have to accept a mean spirited Teresa May’s and Nigel Farage’s bad Brexit that will result in fewer jobs, higher prices and less money for public services.   That’s why the Liberal Democrats and myself here in Hammersmith want you to have your choice over your future.  We want you to have your say  on the Brexit deal in a referendum, and if you don’t like the deal you should be able to reject it and choose to remain in Europe.

There is hope! You can change of direction of the country on June 8!
